The 5 Hottest Micro-Trends for the 2021 Winter Season: Are they worth it?

If you have been following fashion, from the runways to the addictive stream of TikTok’s fashion content, for the past year or so, you may have come across the term micro trend. So what exactly is a micro-trend?

What Is A Microtrend?

First, we should start by breaking down the idea of a trend. By definition, a trend is a general direction in which something is developing or changing. Trends in fashion are usually determined by the popular styles and silhouettes that occur on the high fashion stage. These then trickle down through different fashion outlets and become not only more accessible, but they multiply into different variants that suit a multitude of styles.

A micro-trend is defined as a trend that quickly rises in popularity and falls out at an even faster rate than that of the standard trend. The fashion cycle of a micro-trend was originally determined to be about 3-5 years in comparison to the traditional trend cycle of 5-10 years. But as we’ve seen through the influence of the pandemic and social media, trends are moving in and out even faster than that. The best example of this comes from the rise and fall of the e-girl aesthetic.

The e-girl aesthetic was a modern internet-born take on the emocore aesthetic. This version included chunky silver jewelry, striped long-sleeved t-shirts underneath oversized band t-shirts, tucked into wide-leg ripped jeans, with dangling chunky pant chains attached.

Why Does It Matter?

The micro-trend model is not just limited to certain aesthetics but can be extended to singular fashion items as well. As we’ve seen on TikTok with the strawberry dress. But in the mass of trends that are pumped out every year, there are a few pieces that make their way into our closets and stay there. These pieces usually have the same few characteristics: their ability to be worn in multiple ways through multiple seasons, their functionality, and their overall quality.

This winter, 5 notable micro-trends have occurred. But the real question becomes: is it worth it to buy them now if they won’t be stylish tomorrow?

Statement Tights

Coming into the winter, layering up as much as possible is a must. But, those of us who would still like to wear a skirt out and about in the burr’s could take this trend in stride. The funky designs embedded in the tights take any plain skirt and sweater look to the next level with ease. They will prove to be a staple in your closet as the best way to draw attention to your lovely-looking yet layered legs.

Capes

Yes, capes are back! With the newest take on the classic outerwear piece, cape silhouettes will change the game. They elevate your outfit to give you a sleek and clean look, or they can simply add to your outfit as a practical layer of warmth for the winter seasons. Capes will be here to stay and a great addition to your wardrobe for the coming chilly days.

Brown

Since the winter season of 2019, this color has been all the rage. From classy to cool, the color creates an array of different vibes. The muted brown tones have been popular in casual wear, suggesting that they will complement anyone’s wardrobe. Plus, the color brings a certain warmth with it to thoroughly thaw out the frigid weather.

Maxi Dresses

Maxi dresses have become a brilliant way for you to stay warm while giving off elegant energy. With the length of the dress, it is easy to add or layer fleece-lined leggings or tights underneath to keep you cozy from the cold. Turtlenecks can be layered under or over, giving the opportunity for a variety of looks to be achieved with one piece. And you can’t go wrong with a killer pair of boots to top it all off.

Adding Some Glam

And last but not least, everything glitz and glam. Coming off of a year in isolation and stale pajamas, adding a little sparkle to your outfit couldn’t do much harm. While I enjoy the sentiment of dressing up just because,  I do find it hard to make this trend practical for the entirety of the winter season. Of course, it would fit right into this New Year’s celebration, but other than that, it could be a trend you could do without.
